Polygon zkEVM Upgrade: A Gateway to Enhanced Compatibility and Efficiency
Polygon is gearing up for a pivotal upgrade called Etrog for its zkEVM, moving towards a Type 2 ZK-EVM. This upgrade, scheduled for February 6, is a transformative step for the Polygon network, especially for developers in the Ethereum ecosystem. It promises seamless deployment of Ethereum code on Polygon’s zkEVM, requiring no modifications – a simple copy-paste process.
The next upgrade for Polygon zkEVM will, effectively, make the network a Type 2 ZK-EVM. What does that mean for developers? It means that you can deploy your code on Polygon zkEVM exactly as it is on Ethereum—just copy-paste and go, no modifications necessary.

A Closer Look at the Etrog Upgrade
The Etrog upgrade will make it easier for developers to migrate their applications from Ethereum to Polygon, thanks to the introduction of five additional pre-compiled smart contracts. This feature enhances EVM-equivalence, allowing existing dApps to operate on Polygon without needing any adjustments.
The upgrade also includes a restructuring of transaction batch processing, aimed at improving network efficiency. Developers can currently test the Etrog upgrade on Cardona, Polygon‘s new Sepolia-anchored testnet. The 10-day timelock for the upgrade, which began on January 27, is an essential governance mechanism, allowing users to independently verify the upgrade and decide whether to keep their funds in the network.
Ripple’s Legal Developments and Avalanche’s GameFi Project
In addition to Polygon’s significant upgrade, the crypto world is abuzz with other key developments. Ripple (XRP) is on the cusp of crucial legal developments with the upcoming deadline on February 12 for the remedies-related discovery phase in its lawsuit against the SEC. The outcome of this phase could significantly impact XRP’s market performance.
Meanwhile, Avalanche (AVAX) is making waves in the GameFi sector with its Shrapnel project, set to begin early access on February 8. Developed by Neon Machine, a spin-off from HBO Interactive, Shrapnel is a blockchain-based shooter game that merges engaging gameplay with blockchain technology, potentially influencing both SHRAP and AVAX prices.
