US General Services Administration To Host Open Data & Accountable Government Event

If you’ve ever thought about how blockchain technology could help the US government do its job better, you might be surprised to learn that a US government institution has also considered the question.

The US General Services Administration’s (GSA) Emerging Citizen Technology program will host a collaborative workshop called Emerging Technology and Open Data for a More Open Government on September 8, 2017. The event, which is meant to attract US businesses, federal managers, civil society groups, and researchers, represents one of the most significant forays by the United States government into emerging technologies, including blockchain.

The Emerging Citizen Technology program is led by the GSA’s Justin Herman who stated: “open data and emerging technologies - including artificial intelligence and distributed ledgers, such as blockchain - hold vast potential to transform public services held back by bureaucracy and outdated IT systems. We are opening the doors to bold, fresh ideas for government accountability, transparency and citizen participation.”

Workshop participants are encouraged to draft proposals highlighting use cases for artificial intelligence and blockchain technology “to advance federal government transparency, accountability, participation and technological innovation.” The proposals may be integrated into the fourth US National Action Plan for Open Government, which will be submitted to the Open Government Partnership. OGP is a multinational initiative comprised of 75 countries that have endorsed the Open Government Declaration, and which seeks “to secure concrete commitments from governments to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption, and harness new technologies to strengthen governance.”

ETHNews will provide updates as more details are revealed.
