U.S. Government Backs Blockchain Hackathon That Focuses on Healthcare

The event will take place March 14-15 in the nation’s capital where the winners will be announced during the DC Blockchain Summit.

The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, in collaboration with the Chamber of Digital Commerce, the world’s leading trade association representing digital assets and the blockchain industry, will be co-hosting the 2017 Blockchain in Healthcare Code-A-Thon.

Contestants in the Code-A-Thon will be challenged to create blockchain-based applications and solutions for the healthcare industry – all within a single, 24-hour period, and will have a chance to win a total of $15,000 in prize money. The event is limited to the first 100 contestants and 50 observers who sign up by March 7, 2017, through the CCC Innovation Center’s website.

Modern healthcare issues to be addressed include:

  • Identity Management and APIs: Demonstrate the use of blockchain to support the identity management requirements for APIs for both provider-to-provider and patient-mediated exchange.
  • Metadata Tagging and Policy Expression: Demonstrate the use of blockchain for security metadata and tagging to manage access, provide auditing and provenance information.
  • Data Aggregation and Linkage: Use of blockchain technology to securely aggregate, link and share patient data to the destination of their choice.

Perianne Boring, president of the Chamber of Digital Commerce, stated:

“The participation of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services speaks volumes about the serious, long-term potential application of blockchain to the healthcare sector. This competition will highlight the wide-reaching benefits of blockchain and distributed ledger solutions, while creating new opportunities for innovation in the healthcare industry.”

The hackathon starts on March 14, with the winner to be announced on the first day of the DC Blockchain Summit on March 15.

Accenture, which recently joined the Chamber, is the title sponsor of the summit.

Speakers at the event include blockchain influencers such as Brian Behlendorf of the Hyperledger Project and Don Tapscott, co-author of the bestselling book “Blockchain Revolution”.
