Tether to Shut Down CNH₮ Stablecoin, Sets 2027 Redemption Deadline

Tether announced on February 21, 2026, that it is discontinuing support for its offshore Chinese yuan-pegged stablecoin, CNH₮, citing low demand and changing market conditions.

The company outlined a structured wind-down process, giving holders one year to redeem their tokens.

Two-Phase Discontinuation Plan

Tether’s transition will take place in two stages:

  • Effective February 21, 2026: All new issuances of CNH₮ have stopped. No additional tokens will be minted.
  • Redemption deadline – February 21, 2027: Users have one year from the announcement date to redeem their holdings. After this date, Tether will no longer be obligated to process redemptions.

Tether also stated it will issue a separate reminder to users before the final redemption cutoff.

Why Tether Is Ending CNH₮

The company said the decision followed an internal review of its product ecosystem.

Tether cited insufficient usage levels of CNH₮, noting that the scale did not justify the operational and technical resources required to maintain the stablecoin under its compliance and infrastructure standards.

The firm indicated that resources will instead be directed toward products with stronger organic demand, including USD₮ and its tokenization platform, Hadron.

The move aligns with previous strategic streamlining efforts, including the discontinuation of the euro-pegged EUR₮ stablecoin in late 2024 and the phase-out of support for several legacy blockchain networks in 2025.

What CNH₮ Holders Should Do

Tether is urging CNH₮ holders to redeem their tokens as soon as possible via the Tether.to platform.

Until February 21, 2027, redemptions will continue under the company’s existing Terms of Service. After that date, CNH₮ will effectively cease to function as a redeemable stablecoin within Tether’s ecosystem.

The announcement reflects a broader trend within the stablecoin sector, where issuers are consolidating around higher-demand products and retiring underutilized tokens.
