Scroll: Ethereum’s Idealistic zkEVM Launching, Sticking to Decentralization Principles

  • After two years of dedication, the Ethereum-based zkEVM Scroll is nearing its launch.
  • Scroll’s philosophy deeply resonates with Ethereum’s foundational values of decentralization.

Despite the presence of numerous zero-knowledge EVMs, the upcoming Scroll stands out, not just for its technological attributes but also its ideological alignment with Ethereum. Co-founder Ye Zhang highlighted the project as an “idealistic” endeavor during a discussion at Token2049.

Beyond mere computational challenges, Scroll represents a heartfelt commitment to the core principles of Ethereum. This passion-driven venture began as an open-source initiative, growing its community organically without falling back on aggressive marketing gimmicks. The commitment and updates surrounding Scroll were underscored in a Cointelegraph post on a tweet by Scroll 📜 @Scroll_ZKP, which mentioned the latest ecosystem updates.

The new zkEVM has stirred interest, having cleared extensive testing and code audits. With significant platforms such as Uniswap and Aave geared up to deploy on Scroll upon its release, the enthusiasm for this project is palpable.

Scroll’s Distinctive Position in the Ecosystem

While the arena of zkEVM solutions is crowded with names like Polygon, Immutable, and StarkWare, Scroll promises unique advantages. Zhang pinpointed “unproven” elements in systems like Linea but championed Scroll for providing a “complete proof” of all Ethereum “opcodes” and transaction facets. Scroll’s integration of zero-knowledge proofs enables off-chain data compression, thereby boosting throughput. The EVM aspect assures full compatibility with existing Ethereum software and applications. Although some initial elements, such as sequencers, are centralized, plans are in place to usher in further decentralization over time.
