Robinhood Expands Into Indonesia With Strategic Dual Acquisition

Robinhood is preparing a major push into Southeast Asia by entering the Indonesian market through the acquisition of two locally licensed firms – PT Buana Capital Sekuritas, a brokerage business and PT Pedagang Aset Kripto, an authorized digital asset trader.

While financial terms were not disclosed, both deals are expected to close in the first half of 2026, subject to regulatory approval. This move gives Robinhood immediate access to two regulated gateways in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies.

A Play for Indonesia’s Massive Retail Investor Base

Indonesia has emerged as a major hub for digital finance, with over 19 million registered capital market participants and nearly 17 million cryptocurrency traders. Robinhood’s strategy is built around tapping into this momentum. By acquiring companies that already hold key operating licenses, Robinhood positions itself to roll out its full suite of services to Indonesian users, including access to U.S. equities and cryptocurrency trading.

The company has been accelerating its global footprint throughout 2025, joining the S&P 500 index and expanding into prediction markets, making Indonesia a natural next step. Pieter Tanuri, the majority shareholder of both acquired firms, will remain as a strategic adviser to support Robinhood’s market entry and long-term development in the country.

Entering a Market With Tightening Digital Asset Rules

Indonesia’s regulatory landscape for digital assets continues to evolve rapidly. Oversight officially transitioned from Bappebti to the Financial Services Authority (OJK) in January 2025, introducing stricter compliance requirements for exchanges, brokers, and custodians. In July 2025, new tax rules increased levies on crypto transactions, further raising the bar for market participants.

By purchasing firms that already possess the required licenses, Robinhood avoids the lengthy and complex registration process that new entrants face. This approach gives the company an operational advantage as Indonesia tightens rules around crypto trading, investor protection, and taxation.

Positioning for a Larger International Expansion

Robinhood’s entry into Indonesia marks another step in its global expansion strategy built on regulatory partnerships, local licensing, and cross-border market access. The dual acquisition provides the infrastructure necessary for Robinhood to serve one of the most active digital asset communities in the world.

With demand for U.S. equities, mobile trading, and crypto investment continuing to rise across Southeast Asia, the company is setting itself up to become a major international player in 2026 and beyond.
