MATIC Blasts Off: Polygon’s ZK-Compatible Upgrade Sets the Main Chain on Fire, Unleashing a Price Surge

  • Polygon has proposed making its main chain, the Polygon POS chain, compatible with Zero Knowledge (ZK) technology for enhanced security and scalability.
  • The upgrade, transforming the main chain into a zkEVM validium, would offer faster transaction confirmations, eliminate reorgs, and make the blockchain more future-proof.

As Ethereum’s leading scalability solution, Polygon is contemplating a significant upgrade to its mainchain, the Polygon POS chain, to incorporate Zero Knowledge (ZK) technology. The proposed alteration, spearheaded by Polygon’s co-founder Mihailo Bjelic, was presented in a pre-proposal discussion post.

The envisaged upgrade would transform the main chain into a zkEVM validium, ensuring its continued compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). Validium differs subtly from ZK rollup, deploying an off-chain data availability model, a feature that provides additional data storage benefits. Polygon previously launched a ZK rollup in March, marking its initial foray into the realm of ZK technology.

If the Polygon community gives a nod to this proposed upgrade, it would significantly bolster the security of the chain and lend it a robust, future-proof framework. The zkEVM validium transformation would entirely eliminate reorgs (chain reorganizations which occur when one chain becomes longer than the one currently considered as the main chain), enabling swifter transaction confirmations, and providing a scalability boost to the blockchain.

Bjelic had previously hinted at Polygon’s interest in integrating ZK technology into its mainchain in a conversation with CoinDesk in February. This recent proposal puts this initiative in the spotlight, sparking discussions about the potential upgrade.

The zkEVM validium upgrade proposal aligns with the ongoing evolution of the platform, dubbed Polygon 2.0. As part of its rebranding, Polygon is slated to unveil a series of announcements regarding its blockchain, token, and governance structures. The adoption of Zero Knowledge technology compatibility would be a crucial milestone in Polygon’s journey, enhancing its scalability solution and marking a significant step towards future-proofing its technology.
