IOTA, in partnership with Walt.id, has launched a groundbreaking solution for user onboarding called “Login with IOTA.” The login solution enables Web2 and Web3 applications to use Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), prioritizing privacy and security. This solution represents a significant step towards solving the privacy weaknesses that traditional identity and access management (IAM) approaches often face.
IOTA’s CEO, Dominik Schiener, highlighted the importance of IAM, stating that “Identity and Access Management (IAM) has been a highly talked about topic in the industry. This is because it is responsible for enabling users to be onboarded in systems like e-commerce, social media, and e-governance.”
Traditionally, IAM has prioritized centralization over privacy, but with the emergence of Web3, new IAM patterns tied around cryptographic keys have been developed. IOTA’s goal is to create an IAM solution that prioritizes privacy and security. “At the heart of the new solution – which we call Login With IOTA – is SSI,” says Schiener.
The key benefit of Login with IOTA is the integration of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) into IAM. SSI gives users control over the information shared with third parties and ensures that verifiers receive authentic and trustworthy information. SSI has been recognized by governmental projects in the EU and is expected to become the de-facto standard for exchanging identity information and credentials.
“For Web2 applications, Login with IOTA offers many benefits, including making a connection with SSI and improving legacy authentication and other customer-related solutions,” says IOTA.
To bridge SSI into Web2, WaLt.id developed the IDP Kit, an OpenID Connect-compliant identity provider that lets you extend existing legacy authentication and Customer Identity and Access Management solutions (such as Keycloak) with the ability to verify and process Verifiable Credentials.
“For Web3 applications, Login with IOTA and Walt.id come together to provide significant perks that come in handy for Web3 applications,” says IOTA.
In Web3 and other decentralized applications, intermediaries (including the IDP Kit) are unnecessary. Instead, a direct connection between users and the app is established through the Self-Issued OpenID Connect Protocol (SIOP). Walt.id provides an implementation in its Wallet Kit and the SSI Kit that can be used to build SIOP-enabled applications.
In conclusion, Login with IOTA is a game-changing solution that offers users control over their information and protects their data from centralized silos. This solution is set to revolutionize IAM and create a new standard for exchanging identity information and credentials. With the recognition of SSI by governmental projects in the EU, IOTA is on track to achieve its goal of making SSI the de-facto standard for exchanging identity information and credentials. The integration of SSI into IAM represents a significant step towards overcoming privacy weaknesses in traditional systems. By enabling Web2 and Web3 apps to utilize SSI for user onboarding, IOTA and Walt.id are paving the way for a more secure and private online
