Recently, Vitalik Buterin, took to social media platform X to express his sadness over the death of Kabochan, the Shiba Inu dog that became famous as the face of the Dogecoin meme. Kabochan, more widely known by her original name, Kabosu, died naturally in her sleep, as announced by her owner, Atsuko Sato.
Sato described Kabosu’s last moments as calm and serene, occurring while sunlight filled the room and birds could be heard outside, marking a peaceful conclusion to the dog’s life. Responding to Sato’s announcement, Buterin posted a brief but heartfelt message: “Rest in Peace Kabochan.“
Kabosu was not merely an internet sensation; she symbolized the fun and whimsical side of the internet and the emerging cryptocurrency culture. Her memorable facial expression not only launched a worldwide meme craze but also helped inspire Dogecoin. What began as a playful digital currency has evolved into the eighth-most valuable cryptocurrency, with a market capitalization of $22.88 billion.
Kabosu was born approximately on November 2, 2005, and was rescued from a puppy mill by Atsuko Sato, who is a kindergarten teacher in Sakura, Japan. Kabosu’s image as the “Doge” went viral in 2013, bringing smiles and laughter to people globally.
The announcement of Kabochan’s death has touched many across social media platforms. The Dogecoin community, also known as “Shibes,” and the larger cryptocurrency community have been actively honoring her memory. Dogecoin’s official X account expressed their condolences, stating,
“Today Kabosu, our community’s shared friend and inspiration, peacefully passed in the arms of her person. The impact this one dog has had across the world is immeasurable. She was a being who knew only happiness and limitless love.”
