- GREE, a major Japanese social gaming company, has teamed up with Mysten Labs for Web3 game development, planning to leverage its Singapore-based subsidiary, BLRD PTE LTD, as a validator for Mysten’s Sui blockchain.
- Mysten Labs, established by former Meta (previously Facebook) blockchain R&D team members and the lead engineer of the ‘Move’ programming language, offers a scalable blockchain solution, ‘Sui’, based on the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) mechanism.
In a groundbreaking alliance, GREE Inc., a prominent Japanese social gaming entity, announced its strategic partnership with Mysten Labs, the creators of Layer1 blockchain ‘Sui’, on 22nd June. The collaboration is set to accelerate the development of Web3 games, utilizing Japan’s Intellectual Property (IP) via ‘Sui’ and augmenting GREE’s significant steps into the world of blockchain.
Under this partnership, BLRD PTE LTD., a wholly-owned subsidiary of GREE based in Singapore, is expected to begin validation for ‘Sui’. Validators play a crucial role in the blockchain world by verifying transaction history, a service rewarded in cryptocurrency.
Established in 2021 by members of Meta’s (formerly known as Facebook) blockchain R&D team and the lead engineer for the programming language ‘Move’, Mysten Labs has developed ‘Sui’. This blockchain operates on the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) mechanism, which offers scalability for high transaction processing capabilities and low fees. Additionally, Sui provides an opportunity to define a wide range of asset characteristics on-chain, creating a user-friendly environment for developers and creators.
Hideshi Araki, GREE’s Executive Director and CEO of BLRD, expressed his firm belief in Web3 as a groundbreaking technology that will shape the next era. He emphasized the partnership with Mysten Labs as a critical step for GREE’s forward movement.
Founded in 2004, GREE has consistently sought to utilize cutting-edge technology in its ventures, all in pursuit of its mission to “make the world better through the internet.” Combining Mysten Labs’ profound expertise in the Web3 domain and GREE’s vast experience in the entertainment industry, the partnership aims to deliver unprecedented entertainment worldwide.
Evan Cheng, Co-Founder and CEO of Mysten Labs, mirrored the enthusiasm, looking forward to the unique content GREE’s renowned IP and their extensive experience in the gaming, anime, and metaverse spaces will bring to ‘Sui’.
GREE has shown its commitment to Web3 development, having announced its entry into the blockchain gaming and Web3 industry through its subsidiary REALITY last September. The company has invested in several promising Web3 projects like the game-specific blockchain project ‘Oasys’. Earlier this month, GREE collaborated with Ava Labs and gaming company gumi to launch the Web3 game development support program ‘Avalanche Arcad3’, which aims to assist traditional Web2 gaming companies transition into the Web3 gaming domain.
