In a heartfelt plea submitted to the court on April 24, Zhao expressed deep regret for his actions and took full responsibility for his mistakes. He acknowledged the need for compliance changes at Binance earlier in its history and emphasized the stringent controls implemented under his leadership.
“I apologize for my poor decisions and accept full responsibility. Rest assured that [this] will never happen again. Please accept my assurance that this will be my only encounter with the criminal justice system…”
Zhao also outlined his commitment to philanthropy, stating his intention to devote most of his time and resources to projects promoting inclusiveness and equal opportunity worldwide.
Over 160 individuals, including loved ones, friends, and colleagues, wrote to the judge presiding over the case, urging leniency and portraying Zhao as a devoted family man and humble tech enthusiast.
“From education programs in Africa to improving the living standards of disadvantaged youth in Southeast Asia, to university projects in Europe, I intend to devote the majority of my time and resources to this area, developing projects in as many places as possible, without Limited to the above example.”
Prosecutors sought severe consequences for Zhao, accusing him of willfully neglecting to implement an effective Anti-Money Laundering program at Binance. They highlighted the exchange’s role in processing transactions linked to illicit activities, including narcotics trafficking and terrorism financing.
Despite prosecutors recommending a 36-month prison term, the judge cited a lack of evidence indicating Zhao’s awareness of illicit activities at the exchange. While Zhao’s sentencing received less attention than other high-profile cases, such as that of Sam Bankman-Fried of FTX, it raises concerns about regulatory oversight in the crypto industry.
Market observers speculate about the implications for future compliance efforts in the industry, while others are eager to move past the legal proceedings and focus on the broader crypto market.
