Euro Tokenization Surges to $750 Million as Startups Race Ahead of ECB’s 2029 Digital Euro Launch

European startups are rapidly tokenizing the euro years before the European Central Bank’s (ECB) official rollout of the digital euro, now slated for 2029. According to data from Token Terminal, the total value of tokenized euros on public blockchains has soared to $750 million, up from just $100 million in January 2023, marking a 650% increase in less than two years.

Tokenized Euro Market Expands Across Multiple Networks

The market for on-chain euros is no longer confined to a single blockchain. Tokens such as EURC and EURe now circulate on Ethereum, Solana, Polygon, Avalanche, Base, and Arbitrum, reflecting a growing multi-chain strategy among stablecoin issuers.

Platforms like EUTBL and EUR CoinVertible have also emerged, catering to institutional-grade payments, decentralized finance (DeFi) liquidity, and cross-border settlement experiments.

Private Innovation Ahead of Public Rollout

While the ECB continues its multi-year testing phase for the official digital euro, private firms have effectively filled the gap, offering tokenized euro solutions with real-world utility. These tokens are increasingly used for on-chain trading, remittances, and yield-bearing DeFi products, creating a functional preview of how Europe’s digital currency infrastructure could operate post-2029.

A Rapidly Growing On-Chain Economy

Analysts note that this early momentum suggests strong institutional demand for euro-backed digital assets. Tokenized fiat is evolving into a critical bridge between traditional banking and decentralized finance, mirroring the earlier adoption of dollar-based stablecoins like USDC and USDT.

If growth continues at the current pace, Europe’s on-chain euro ecosystem could surpass $1 billion in market capitalization well before 2026, effectively establishing a parallel infrastructure that complements, and potentially accelerates, the ECB’s digital euro initiative.
