Can’tstantinople is out, buffiDai comes to ETHDenver, and the Görli testnet goes live.

Your daily distillation of crypto news for Thursday, January 31, 2019:

Geth v1.8.22, "Can'tstantinople"

Hudson Jameson of the Ethereum Foundation shared on reddit today that Geth v1.8.22 has been released. This update, informally referred to as "Can'tstantinople," disables EIP 1283, the buggy proposal responsible for the Constantinople delay, and re-enables all changes included with the hard fork. The disabling of EIP 1283 is considered its own fork, called Petersburg.

The release of v1.8.22, the reddit post notes, "is meant to ease the transition on networks like Ropsten where the Constantinople transition had already taken place when an issue with EIP-1283 was discovered." Further, Constantinople and Petersburg will be activated on the Ethereum mainnet simultaneously at block number 7,280,000. Petersburg will take effect on the Ropsten testnet, however, at block number 4,939,394.

ETHDenver's Cryptoeconomy Powered by buffiDai

In dogfooding spirit, POA Network has collaborated with SolidcoinAustin GriffithBrian EthierSendWyreQuantstamp, the ETHDenver crew, and MakerDAO (among others) to develop a Dai-pegged "local coin" called buffiDai for the ETHDenver hackathon next month. Deployed on POA's xDai Chain, buffiDai will be the preferred currency at the event. Ziggy Zeidan of POA noted that "food truck vendors, bartenders, merch tables, and even some local businesses" will accept buffiDai.

Although the initial thought was to create a new POA blockchain specifically for ETHDenver, Zeidan said tools already existed to implement something like buffiDai for the event. xDai Chain provides the infrastructure for the cryptoeconomic system, while Griffith's Burner Wallet provides the interface.

Zeidan went on to say that the buffiDai-centered cryptoeconomic system at ETHDenver "may well be the largest closed cryptoeconomic experiment to take place to date." The POA team looks forward to seeing the outcome of this so-called experiment.

Görli Testnet, Alive!

Today at GörliCon in Berlin, the Görli testnet was officially launched. Görli is a proof-of-authority testnet on Ethereum designed to sync various clients, including Parity Ethereum, Geth, Nethermind, Pantheon, and EthereumJS.

The testnet was born during ETHBerlin last September but has been growing since then. Collaborators from organizations such as MakerDAO and POA Network have contributed to the open-source project. One major advancement, for example, has been the development of the Kotti testnet, which is like Görli but on the Ethereum Classic network.

Correction (1/31/2019): This article has been updated to more clearly reflect the various parties that have worked on buffiDai.
