Distributed Digest: Monday, January 7, 2019

Colorado senators introduce crypto-related legislation, Fortnite isn’t really accepting Monero, and Ledger’s Nano X is coming soon.

Formerly known as the Daily Byte, Distributed Digest is ETHNews' daily distillation of crypto news. Here's what's happening for Monday, January 7, 2019:

Senators Propose the Colorado Digital Token Act

Colorado state senators Steve Fenberg (D) and Jack Tate (R) recently filed a bill to enact the Colorado Digital Token Act. The legislation proposes an exemption from Colorado's securities registration and licensing requirements for entities using cryptocurrency for "a primarily consumptive purpose." The bill defines such a purpose as providing or receiving "goods, services, or content, including access to goods, services, or content."

The first section of the bill maintains that companies in Colorado may want to use cryptoeconomic systems, but they "face regulatory uncertainty" because of existing state law. The legislation aims to clear any confusion so that these companies can "seek to acquire growth capital and customers" vis-à-vis cryptocurrency.

Fortnite Retail Row Not Accepting Monero

Speaking of confusion, the crypto grapevine has led to some misunderstanding regarding the Fortnite merchandise shop, Retail Row, starting to accept Monero payments. According to CEO Tim Sweeney of Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, the game's "brief foray into crypto was accidental." Despite what Riccardo "fluffypony" Spagni of Monero said, Epic Games is not actively pursuing crypto at this time, as Sweeney believes that "a lot more work is needed on volatility and fraud-proofing before bringing it to such a broad audience that includes younger gamers."

Although fluffypony was enthusiastic about yet another retailer accepting Monero, it appears that the Fortnite situation was simply a rumor gone awry.

Ledger Nano X Unveiled

Not a rumor, though, is Ledger's latest hardware wallet, the Nano X. Announced today at the CES conference in Las Vegas (and currently available for preorder), the Ledger Nano X will include improved features. Eric Larchevêque, CEO of Ledger, noted:

"With its Bluetooth connectivity and increased capacity, the Ledger Nano X provides an enhanced user experience while delivering the mobility and state-of-the-art security that customers expect from Ledger. It is exciting to be recognized by CES as the go-to leader for securing crypto assets."

News of the updated wallet comes after a team of security researchers exposed vulnerabilities with Ledger's Nano S and Blue models.
