On Friday, software engineer Yuri Lebedev was sentenced to 16 months in prison for his role in creating, an unregistered bitcoin exchange that was found to have facilitated criminal activity.

On October 20, 2017, US District Judge Alison Nathan sentenced Ukrainian software engineer Yuri Lebedev to 16 months in prison after a jury had convicted him earlier this year on charges of conspiracy and fraud related to his work for, an unregistered bitcoin exchange based in Florida.

According to court filings, the US alleged that Lebedev ran multiple servers for that deceived banks and payment processors, by allowing the exchange to mask bitcoin transactions as fictitious food delivery charges and memorabilia purchases.

In June 2017, the same judge sentenced Lebedev’s colleague, Anthony Murgio, to more than five years in prison for operation of the unlicensed exchange as well as a bribery scheme involving a credit union Murgio and his co-conspirators controlled and used for’s illegal operations. Lebedev was also charged with, and convicted of, helping arrange bribes to Trevon Gross, the New Jersey pastor that originally ran the credit union. Gross is scheduled to be sentenced later this month.
