Cathie Wood Explains Why Ethereum Still Can’t Overtake Bitcoin

Cathie Wood, the founder and CEO of Ark Invest, has reaffirmed her view that Bitcoin remains the dominant asset in the cryptocurrency sector, arguing that Ethereum, despite its powerful role in decentralized finance, still faces structural limitations that prevent it from surpassing Bitcoin’s position. Speaking in a recent interview with the Savvy Finance channel, Wood emphasized that Bitcoin’s design, utility, and market behavior continue to set it apart from every other digital asset.

Wood noted that while Ethereum has become the backbone of DeFi applications, the network’s fee structure reveals an important dynamic: much of Ethereum’s economic activity ultimately migrates to Layer-2 scaling solutions. According to her, this trend raises questions about Ethereum’s long-term status as a Layer-1 settlement layer, even as Layer-2 ecosystems grow more competitive and sophisticated.

The rapid expansion of L2 platforms may strengthen Ethereum’s overall ecosystem, but Wood suggests it also fragments the value capture that would otherwise remain on the base chain. This stands in contrast to Bitcoin, whose monetary premium and fixed-supply design reinforce its position as the leading “pure” cryptocurrency asset.

The broader debate, whether Ethereum could one day overtake Bitcoin, remains one of the most contested topics in the digital asset industry. But for Wood, the divergence is clear: Ethereum’s technological strengths don’t necessarily translate into displacement of Bitcoin’s role as the market’s foundational asset.
