Aiken Alpha Phase Launches for Cardano Smart Contracts Cardano has announced the launch of Aiken’s alpha phase, an open-source smart contract language and toolchain specifically designed to simplify and enhance the development of smart contracts on the Cardano platform. Aiken addresses the challenges developers face with setting up, learning, and using Haskell Plutus, the existing smart contract platform on Cardano.

Aiken was created in response to the difficulties developers faced when trying to debug smart contracts and interact with low-level blockchain components. Additionally, the Haskell Plutus platform had poor interoperability with off-chain languages other than Haskell, limiting developers’ toolset.

Purpose-Built for Cardano
Aiken has been purpose-built for Cardano and includes several domain-specific conveniences to make the development process easier and more efficient. Some of these features include helpful and quick compiler feedback, automatic code formatting, language server with editor integrations, a testing and benchmarking framework, and an interoperable and portable binary specification format (CIP-0057).
Next Steps for Aiken The Aiken team will conduct audits to ensure the toolkit meets the standards expected of an enterprise-grade solution. To prepare Aiken for mainnet deployment, the team needs early developers and feedback to shape the platform for longevity. The goal is to grow the Aiken community and develop the open-source project further.
