Canada's Information and Communications Technology Council Focuses On Establishing Blockchain Ecosystem

A new initiative from the Information and Communications Technology Council in Canada will create a nationwide blockchain ecosystem, stimulating economic growth and job creation.

On October 23, 2017, Canada's Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) announced an initiative to develop a national blockchain ecosystem.

The initiative will be joined by ColliderX, a crowdsourced blockchain resource and development hub; the Blockchain Association of Canada; and the Blockchain Research Institute. It will create approximately 107,700 jobs and boost the blockchain market to 2.5 billion Canadian dollars according to ICTC forecasts. The ICTC said that the "sense of urgency" and "strong momentum" of supporters helped raise over $50 million in a few weeks and expressed its gratitude.

Namir Anani, ICTC president and CEO has long been a proponent of advancing digital skillsets through Canada's education system and previously helped form an education and skills taskforce, focusing on national policy from both a private and public sector perspective. His participation in this latest initiative follows this tradition of supporting new technology. "This is a pivotal and transformative agenda for Canada that rallied so far considerable and tangible support," said Anani. "We are delighted to advance this initiative forward with key leaders and innovators in this space."

The next steps for the ICTC will involve working with members of the blockchain community, companies, academic institutions, non-profit organizations, and others to continue cultivating competitiveness in Canada while establishing a network to spur further growth.

Blockchain Research Institute Co-Founder and Executive Chairman Don Tapscott expressed a sense of urgency regarding Canada's technological progress. "Canada is a leader in blockchain technology, but it’s critical we take action to maintain our digital advantage for years to come,” said Tapscott. “This initiative is one of the critical ways we can assure Canada leads the second era of the digital revolution.”

The ecosystem initiative is scheduled to engage in activities on January 1, 2018, and ETHNews will continue to report on the network’s projects and innovations.
