BNB Smart Chain Prepares for Fermi Hard Fork on January 14

BNB Smart Chain (BSC) is set to activate its Fermi hard fork on January 14, 2026, at 02:30 UTC, marking one of the network’s most significant performance upgrades to date.

The update focuses on faster block production, improved stability, and greater efficiency, positioning BSC for higher-demand use cases such as decentralized finance (DeFi) and Web3 gaming.

The most notable change is a reduction in block times from 0.75 seconds to 0.45 seconds, a move designed to accelerate transaction confirmations and improve overall network responsiveness.

Shorter block intervals allow applications to settle transactions more quickly, enhancing the user experience for trading, gaming, and other high-frequency on-chain activities.

To ensure the network remains stable despite the faster pace, the upgrade introduces extended voting parameters within the consensus mechanism, as outlined in BEP-590. These changes are intended to preserve fast finality and protect network reliability even as blocks are produced more rapidly.

The Fermi hard fork also brings efficiency improvements at the smart contract level. With the introduction of EVM Super Instructions, common operations can be executed more efficiently, potentially lowering costs and improving performance for developers building on BSC.

From an infrastructure perspective, node operators will benefit from a new indexing mechanism that allows nodes to synchronize only the data they need, rather than the full block history. This reduces storage and computing requirements, making it easier to run and maintain nodes on the network.

The upgrade is mandatory. All validators and node operators must update to client version v1.6.4 or later to remain compatible with the network after the fork. Major platforms, including Binance, have confirmed full support for the upgrade and will temporarily suspend BEP20 token deposits and withdrawals shortly before activation to ensure a smooth transition.

Overall, the Fermi hard fork represents a clear step in BNB Smart Chain’s broader strategy to scale performance while maintaining stability, reinforcing its role as a high-speed blockchain for next-generation Web3 applications.
