TenneT Tests Blockchain Managed Grid With Teslas

Leading European electricity provider TenneT has joined forces with Vandebron, sonnen eServices, and IBM to launch the first pilot programs using blockchain technology to enable decentralized energy sources, which will help manage the electricity grid.

After corresponding with TenneT media relations advisor Johanna Breuning, ETHNews learned that the pilot programs will include residential batteries in Germany and use 200 to 500 Tesla vehicles in the Netherlands to test proof of concept.

Breuning said TenneT chose to work with IBM's private blockchain solution, Hyperledger, "because TenneT wants to work with trusted aggregators."

According to TenneT's website, the projects will use blockchain technology to "ensure the verifiability and transparency of the transactions of the small-scale batteries and electric cars." Vandebron will work directly with customers in the Netherlands who own electric vehicles to lend the capacity of their car batteries to the grid, without compromising the batteries so they will remain readily available. The pilot project by sonnen eServices in Germany will be focused on re-dispatch measures that utilize a network of residential solar batteries, preventing overload to the grid and reducing insufficient transport capacity limitations relative to wind energy.

It will take several months until the study is complete.

"We hope we can open the market for other parties in the beginning of 2018," said Breuning.
