Devcon2: The Future of Ethereum

The future is a common theme at this year’s Devcon in Shanghai.

Taylor Gerring of the Ethereum Foundation asked developers to explain the blockchain to their parents. Most people in the world have never heard of the blockchain and don't really care about a technology unless it immediately impacts their lives. Discussion about Ethereum’s future and how it can impact people is vital. The Ethereum Dapp developer community has been gifted with a powerful selection of state-of-the-art tools that are needed to build real-world businesses on the blockchain.

There’s now a need to demonstrate the usefulness of this technology to the world. That involves solving real-world problems, making existing processes more efficient and building profitable businesses. Many are doing this already.

A quick glance at gives a high-level view of Dapp progress in the real world and sites like this are a very good way to introduce Ethereum to new users. It shows how Ethereum can be implemented in the real world. As the community looks ahead over the next two or three years, it shows a lot of promise for Ethereum. The room full of 700 developers at Devcon will return to their home countries recharged, motivated and even more enthusiastic about smart contract technology and hit the ground running. The near-term challenges are not just technical – incredible work has been done by some of the smartest people in the world (some of those individuals from the Ethereum Foundation) and has gotten us to the point we’re at now. The unveiling of Cash Eth by Santander today is a solid step forward and there will undoubtedly be more advanced initiatives.

Stay tuned for more updates.

The next chapter will be about integrating Ethereum as a once small, somewhat isolated, blockchain project into the supporting technological fabric of the real world. Developers and supporters will also need to address the coming legal, regulatory and compliance challenges before that can happen. In the interim, there will be a focus on building more high-quality, user-focused Dapps and championing Ethereum to new users.
