Blockchain Launches Digital Asset Research Lab With IC3RE

Blockchain (also known as recently announced its launch of a Digital Asset Research Lab in partnership with Imperial College London.

Blockchain, a company that originally started as a “geeky hacker project aimed at making bitcoin just a little more accessible by building an explorer,” has become a software platform that provides charts, stats, markets, an API, and a wallet for cryptocurrency users. With the culmination of 2016, Blockchain launched a different design on and released the third version of their wallet. They opened this year with their new logo reveal, and now a research lab.

The Digital Asset Research Lab is funded as part of a three-year partnership with the Centre for Cryptocurrency Research and Engineering (IC3RE) at Imperial College London. Designed to enable ongoing research and application related to cryptocurrency and blockchain tech, the research lab aims to be the leading international center in the industry.

The lab will include a Steering Committee which will oversee the performance of current projects, and consider and approve of potential future projects. Initial research projects to come out of the lab will likely focus on smart contracts and state channels. The committee will meet twice a year with Blockchain CEO, Peter Smith who will take the helm of identifying and agreeing upon priority areas for research and prototyping.

Smith stated:

“Exponential technologies have incredible impacts on our society. They re-imagine the world in ways that inspire and surprise us. Every year, from transaction growth, to new users coming online, the bitcoin network, and the blockchain have been doubling in size. We’re excited to be at the leading edge of research to understand this technology’s impact on the broader world.”

IC3RE was established in April 2015 to facilitate blockchain and distributed ledger technological growth. The Centre has helped many blockchain-related student projects and advised the UK and international governments on blockchain technology.

From Director of IC3RE, Professor William Knottenbelt:

“As digital assets mature and we see increased adoption, the time has come to investigate the challenges surrounding this nascent but transformative technology. Blockchain is the perfect partner to help us realize that ambition. We look forward to working with Blockchain CEO Peter Smith and the team.”

Blockchain has noted that they chose to partner with Imperial because of the firm’s commitment to encouraging the support of next generation blockchain developers. Smith further says, “Imperial graduate students are among the best in the world and Blockchain is excited to join to help them shape the future.”
