In a novel approach to product sales, Adidas, a world-leading sports apparel company, has teamed up with acclaimed Web3 artist Fewocious to unveil a physical sneaker collaboration sold via an NFT redemption pass.
Exploring the theme of ‘the art of play,’ this collaboration between Adidas and Fewocious will release an NFT mint pass termed “Trefoil Flower” exclusively on the OpenSea marketplace on June 22. With a total of 4,500 editions, the mint pass will serve as a direct redemption ticket for a pair of customized physical sneakers dubbed Adidas Originals Campus 00s. From August, holders can ‘burn’ (irreversibly destroy) the NFT to initiate the redemption process, with the delivery of the sneakers expected the following month.
The physical sneakers will feature a Near Field Communication (NFC) tag – a technology device utilized in mobile phones, contactless credit cards, and passports for scanning and verification – which will link to a companion NFT.
The release strategy for the Trefoil Flower NFT involves a three-tier pre-sale, followed by a public mint. Owners of Adidas’ existing Alts Decos and Soles NFTs, along with Fewocious Paint Drops, will be given early access to minting at a discounted rate of 0.2 ETH (equivalent to roughly $350 as of the time of writing).
A second phase will allow holders of other Adidas Alts, Fewocious NFTs, and select listed NFTs – including Bored Ape Yacht Club, Doodles, and Rug Radio NFTs – to mint at 0.25 ETH ($435). The public sale will commence shortly after at the same price.
Fewocious, also known as Victor Langlois, is a transgender artist known for his vibrant, playful art that often reminisces about childhood memories. Since his inception into the NFT world three years ago, he has become one of Web3’s most noteworthy creators, clocking over $50 million in lifetime sales and collaborating with notable entities such as Nike-owned RTFKT, auction houses Christie’s and Sotheby’s, and the David Bowie estate.
The entry of Adidas into the NFT space started in December 2021, with the acquisition of a Bored Ape NFT to create the fictional character Indigo Herz. The brand’s ‘Into the Metaverse’ collection, created in collaboration with Bored Ape Yacht Club, Punks Comic, and anonymous NFT influencer gmoney, has facilitated over $150 million in NFT trading volume to date.
