Aside from the most common fraud cases, (for example, credit card fraud), designer shoe fraud is surprisingly high on the black-market list. And Chronicled, a San Francisco tech startup, is combating that fraud with their new innovative technology.

Washington DC-based sneaker shop, Major, recently released a limited edition pair of sneakers called, MAJOR x Reebok Phase 1 Pro “Stars and Stripes”, to celebrate Independence Day. But what makes these sneakers even more valuable, is their protection against fraud utilizing the Ethereum technology.

Bedazzled with the patriotic red, white, and blue colors and distinctive stars and stripes, these shoes employ an innovative addition to their flashy design. Chronicled has joined with Major, as well as other sneaker experts, brand partners, and retails stores, to add tamper proof Smart Tags to every pair of authentic sneakers. Smart Tags act as the sneakers’ digital presence on the internet.

According to their site:

“Now anyone can verify a sneakers’ authenticity with the tap of a mobile phone.”

Chronicled originally took the opportunity to showcase their product last month on Father’s Day with Mache Customs, an influential designer of high-end custom sneakers, by launching a collection of sneakers equipped with the Smart Tag tech in honor of Kanye West and his daughter, North. Then on Independence Day, Major, Reebok, and Chronicled joined forces to create a shoe that’s available for purchase to the public

So how do these Smart Tags work? To verify a sneaker’s authenticity, you can scan the Smart Tag by tapping your mobile phone- there’s no app required. You can also download the Chronicled App, where you can build your sneaker collection, follow other’s collections, and track your wish list. If you want to authenticate your own sneakers, you may visit Chronicled’s booths at sneaker events, or reserve a spot to have the entire collection authenticated.

George Hallam, External Relations at the Ethereum foundation stated,

“The services Chronicled are offering highlight the ever-closing gap between the promise of blockchain technology and its actual utilization in the real world.”

After the recent DAO situation, this product couldn’t have come sooner. The DAO has inflicted some damage on Ethereum’s reputation and the general public is constantly being misinformed about this new technology. But with products like this, it’s more hopeful that these products will restore faith to the community and show others that Ethereum’s capabilities expand beyond currency use.
